The longer
I have this doe here, the more I love her. She is very sensitive,
and has to try harder than those with calm personalities to be
a good goat, but she really does try. She was sold to me
because she was such a beast in the show ring at her first show
that her breeder put her on the sale page in disgust--but she
apparently had no intention of being shown the door again, because
she always behaved perfectly for us, though it took some convincing
to get her to walk with her head up. It helps that she is very
fond of horse cookies. She has been everything we have asked her
to be--great mom, beautiful show doe, happy milker. Thanks are
due to my good friend Sunni for not only letting me have this
paragon, but for not being mad that she has turned around so well!

(Left photo
by Lorene Toth)This is without question one of the most beautiful
and correct Nigerian Dwarf does I have ever seen. Nicknamed "Chiara
the Invisible" for her completely mysterious poor showing
in the show ring this year (2009), as she has failed to even earn
first in her class in 4 shows and counting (yes, the above photos
are from 2009, as is the likewise non-winning dairy herd pictured
in the link to the rear view.)Like Party, Chiara has a little
trouble reconciling herself to being a dairy goat, but we think
she is more than worth the trouble. Her second freshening udder
was so much better than her first that I consider her a cautionary
tale about making decisions about a first freshener too hastily.
Her udder is very capacious, and when full, it absolutely does
not move, and the rear view is just beautiful, even when the doe
is at a dead run. I know this for sure because she demonstrates
it to me every day at milking time. As always, thanks Kellye,
for breeding such beauties and for sending them my way! For

I have always
particularly liked this doe's dam, Treasure
, (here's
another udder shot) who was RGCH on 5 occasions, and twice
GCH. Sadly Treasure was lost to cancer recently. Andi is an absolute
love, and a beauty as well. With that mark on her muzzle, she looks
like she belongs in a "Got milk?" ad. That's appropriate,
as she is a pleasure to milk with terrific teats. Thanks again, Kellye!

A few years back, when I asked
Sunni to choose for me the doe kid she would keep if she had room
for just one more, Penumbra was the one she sent me. She epitomizes
the best of Flat Rocks; our 2007 linear appraiser, Elizabeth Henning,
agreed that she is one of our most promising young does. In addition,
she has a personality almost too big for her body, and a level of
creativity that rivals that of the Meg/Calliope line. She believes
we should all live in interesting times, and works to make it so.

(Photo

until it comes time to make her way to the milk stand--then watch
out; she is unstoppable. Obviously a dairy goat in her soul!

(Thanks,
Michael Covey, for helping me get this picture!) For her cheerful
and sunny personality, this doe is one of my favorites. She is so
much fun to interact with and to milk that she ended up not getting
bred for the show season in 2007, because her heats are very subtle
unless she is penned near the bucks. The winter days just kept going
by and I didn't want to stop milking her and move her to where she
would show that she was in season--before I knew it, it was
spring and she had stopped cycling. Fortunately Rio caught her on
one of his clean-up visits this summer, and she kidded with beautiful
buck doe twins in December. I just can't seem to avoid this situation
with this doe; she will be dry in 2009. For more

Typical electric personality
from the Meg line. This doe in my favorite bright chamoisee is easily
the loudest forlorn maiden during her heat cycle that I have ever
heard...and like her mother before her, nothing can stop her from
making her way to the buck pen, either. Well, she knows where it
is, and never wanders anywhere else, so we let her have her way,
but it can be hard to wait until November to get her bred!
At 6 her udder is still high and widely attached, and she
is milking better than ever this year. For more photos and

(This terrific picture
by Kieran Dean.) When
asked recently which living goat I would take home if I could have
absolutely anyone, I chose Pacifica's dam, Nonpareil. It is obvious
that this line is incredibly prepotent for the look and quality
that Nonpareil represents--I think that Pacifica is very nearly
the spitting image of her dam, although she is not quite as capacious.
And now I am so happy to have Pacifica's lookalike daughter, Sweetwater,
back--3 generations of gorgeous girls indeed. For more photos

We really need
to get body shots of this pretty doe in milk, but she freshens
early each year and we just never seem to get her clipped! She
milks very well, and was the first doe in our herd to have earned
her star on 305-day test. For more photos and information,

I absolutely
love this doe, and I feel so lucky to have her here. Sunni, Ella's
breeder, has retained her full sister Ever After, and considers
her one of her best--and we can see why. Ella's dam is closely
linebred on Surprise: she is both a Surprise daughter and granddaughter.
Ella represents a cross of the Surprise line with a Kingwood descendant,
which has proven very successful in the past. She is very elegant
and level on the move, with great legs and feet and a sweet, cheerful
disposition to boot. Ella's udder is a carbon copy of her beautiful
sister's; for more photos and information, click here

Deirdre is one
of our nicest does, and as such she represents a techable moment
for me, because I did not see it at first. I just could not look
past the power of this girl to see how dairy she really is; but
judges consistently commend her on this quality. She also has a
terrific work ethic; I have no other goat who knows exactly what
she is supposed ot do when she walks into a show ring, and just
does. it. For more pictures and information,
